One thing about Turbo Tax is you should be carefully choosing online version or software, you can not import infos from one tax year to the next tax year if you switch from online to software or vice versa. Also, looking for online version discount up to 50% from you credit union(s) or stock brokers such as Fidelity ... I had been using Turbo Tax Online for more than 5 years and I'm staying with online version for convenience not to retype all personal infos and investment gain/loss from previous years.

If your income is less than $54k then you may be qualified for free federal online filing. Search for freefile on www.irs.gov

We started using H&R Block's competing software (Tax Cut?). My accountant was charging too much and doing too little. Seems to work fine, comparing the year-before-we-switched. Handles dividends and odd income properly. At this point I do like the auto-import from last year's data.

^^ I did this last year.

The IRS sent me to a free file place, but it wasn't free; I make way under $54K. In any case it was like $15-20, and it was an online program that was very easy to use. I got a nice refund too.

Not true. I just imported my 2006 forms/data from my hardrive to the online version. Worked like a charm.

I could not import turbo tax data hard drive to online version few years ago. I had to enter all infos by hand. It is good that turbo tax fixed that problem.

like other said, the "interview" part is where you want to go for your first swing at it..... it asks lots of stupid questions but lots of good questions too.

I think I have used turbotax since about 1995 (i am sooooo old... )

I used turbo tax for the first time 2 years ago and will never pay an accountant to do them again. It is cheaper, faster and IMO just as accurate if not more. I am a homeowner but not a business owner so cannot comment on that aspect. But I can honestly say I don't ever see myself paying an accountant ever again.
ftw

hmm... i tried turbo tax one year on my own but didn't file, then i went to my accountant only to find he got a much larger deduction than i did. i guess it came down to aggressiveness. he was much more aggressive and deducted things in areas that i did not. things i didn't have receipts for like rent and gas and other misc items.

plus i guess i pay him for peace of mind as this is his profession and he has dealt with audits in the past and can easily handle me and his deduction on my behalf in the court of law in the event of an audit. if i get audited using turbo tax, i'd be screwed. but i am a freelance artist and have many deductions so if yours is pretty straight forward i guess it is ok.
