I drove in NYC once (in a Chevy Sprint! Talk about taking your life in your hands!) and was told that if you use your turn signal when you intend to change lanes it alerts the drivers behind you to speed up to prevent you from getting ahead of them.

Probably a lot of truth to that, given what I saw there.

My understanding is that you have to use your signal when your lane change will affect another driver, but not if you're far enough away that it won't matter.

Whatever.

I know it sounds very sexist, but by far the largest number of non-signallers are of the female variety. If I'm going in the same direction they are, I try to check them out to see what they look like. They nearly always seem to fit a particular profile - 18 - 25, with fake blonde, crinkly hair.

As long as I'm not driving in L.A., I find nearly all guys tend to use their turn signals properly.
