Default Umbilical Cord Blood preservation?

My son will be born in August, and I'm contemplating storing his umbilical cord blood, along with whatever else from his birth that can be preserved in case he gets ill later - I'm not familiar with the subject so if you have experience or knowledge please share it with us as I'm already worried about my baby boy.

It's amazing to be a dad even though he's not even born yet

We called a few places for info and they bugged us so much I told them to take a hike. I think they guilt you into it more than anything. My doctor said to skip it.

Argument for: It COULD be a life insurance policy for your child

Argument against: Waste of money

I don't know much about it, but I'll ask around from the specialists I know and get back to you.

I would say do it. If something should i.e. Leukemia and he needs stem cells or a BMT, you will be glad you had it.

One of my friends did it recently. From what he said the cost wasn't too bad, and I would say that it is a small price to pay now for something that could save your son's life in the future ......

People hang on to every last hope if there's scientific proof or not.

There's good data for using cord derived stem-cells for bone marrow transplant after high-dose salvage chemo.

that's the reason why we did it for both of our kids....both are under 2.

your blood is your blood.......

plus, on an annualized basis, the storage fee is cheaper than 2 tanks of gas ($75CN each).

up front wasn't too bad either 3-400 bucks each.

one other thing.....

on the off-chance that the child will actually need this sometime down the road, hopefully the medical technology will have progressed that there are more instances when it can be used (beneficially).
