Not so strange when you consider that the USSR, as it was once called, was on the same side in WWII. Of course, lots of crazy shit has happened since then, but there was a time when the US and USSR were united against an evil known as Hitler...

I think it's extrememly fortunate that the Russians are on-side (so far).

My take...

"My enemy's enemy is my friend"

Besides Russia knows they can go to war with us. They haven't the money or the resourses.

"If you can't beat'em... Join'em"

The Russia that exists today is in no way the russia of the 1980s.

Go read about the attack on the USS Liberty, and then tell me if you think Israel is an "ally."
Actually, I never said that Israel IS or isn't a friend or ally. Personally, I think the US stuck its nose into the middle east, carved out a piece of Palestine in order to "give it back" to the Isrelis. Hmmm, let me think about it, an outside power comes in, carves out a piece of land that Palestinians have held for generations and gives it to those who Palestinians dislike intensely, and then this outside power is naive enough to think that this "righting" of history will not cause problems?

On the otherhand, You'd thing that Israel would be more thankful than to bite the hands that have fed and supported their "new" existance.

No, I never said that they were an ally because I am not that naive. ...and neither is Israel.

(oops, i think i just got political...sorry cthree)

So since we blew up the Chinese embassy once, China will never be an ally of the US right? But they fought with the US in WWII.

and since Great Britain was at war with us a long time ago and attacked us on our land in 1812, Great Britain will never be an Ally either? Oops, they fought with us in WWII too!

The US Liberty is not a good analogy.

As you know the situations are dynamic and thus we fought with the USSR in WWII, against them in the Cold Wars. Who knows what is next.

Actually, the Russians will probably be our greatest supporter
in our coming efforts. You see, they have this little problem
called Chechneya. The Islamic Chechen bastards bombed three apartment buildings in Moscow and the Taliban is supplying fighters and weapons to them. I don't always like what the Russians do, but we are all in the same boat now. I believe the Russians are looking for a excuse to give the Taliban some payback.

I guess they had their reasons for invading Afganistan way back when. They shouldn't have left IMHO. By the way, we are the ones that armed Bin-Laden to fight the Soviets.

That was my point!
The article is quite interesting and explains it.
Here it is if you missed it:

http://www.msnbc.com/news/190144.asp

Russia now is a much different place than the Soviet Union was back then!

And, you bet they have some "unresolved issues" with this monster!!!

Russia, or rather the USSR, got its head handed to it in Afghanistan, much the way we did in Vietnam. I can't imagine them caring too much if we try to create an alliance against Afghanistan if the Taliban refuses to surrender bin Laden to a World court, if not for the most recent crime, then for several others of the last few years, including the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole.
