i think you can. you might have to disable 3G on your phone tho. if you call in and want to change service just tell them you have a 1G iPhone.

plus, is that $15 for unlimited data on the edge network?

I thought the $30 is iphone specific, independent of 3G. I think you can; just don't tell them you have an iphone. They may find out after a while, and I don't know what kind of penalties they'd tack on for it, so be careful.

I dont think that will work... most service providers require the IMEI number on your phone to activate data plans... so that would tell them you have an iphone

True, but if he's already got the data plan with another phone, swapping the SIM should work, no?

Yes, I am already using ATT with a SE phone with mediaNET (for internet) under contract. I don't think I am qualify for the iphone 3G/S plan upgrade until my contract expire

I am just wondering if I can get a unlocked iphone and just plug in the SIM card to make it work

no.... your sim card has nothing to do with the internet or data plan you have on your phone. That is why they have to have your IMEI number on your phone in order to activate a data plan. I found this out a few months back, I tried swapping my sim into another phone and everything worked fine except for internet because there wasnt a plan setup for the phone. I had to call CSR and all they needed was the IMEI number on the phone I wanted the net on and they activated it.
