I remember reading somewhere that using car charger to charge cell phone is bad for the phone's battery?

probably myth.
the ac adapter in your house is going to lower the voltage anyway. so it is the same current at the phone.

The guy I buy my cell phones from tells me all the time to avoid charging it in the car.

 

tell that salesman he is a retard. I've been working in cellular since '94 and have never heard of such a thing. what carrier is this idiot working with??

 

from experience working as a radio shack clown for a year or two through college, my poorly educated guess is that the problem is overcharging, not charging with this or that charger.

cheap car chargers often cut costs by not including an 'off' switch when the phone is fully charged, so they keep trying to feed the battery after it's full, which in turn seems to ruin the battery life of li-on batteries.

that's my guess, FWIW
