I remember reading somewhere that using car charger to charge cell phone is bad for the phone's battery?

truth or myth?

probably myth.
the ac adapter in your house is going to lower the voltage anyway. so it is the same current at the phone.

from experience working as a radio shack clown for a year or two through college, my poorly educated guess is that the problem is overcharging, not charging with this or that charger.

cheap car chargers often cut costs by not including an 'off' switch when the phone is fully charged, so they keep trying to feed the battery after it's full, which in turn seems to ruin the battery life of li-on batteries.

that's my guess, FWIW
