Watch enthusiasts help!
Are you confused yet? Or have you seen about 10 watches that you would like to own?
I have only one comment concerning a chrono watch. From my experience, one of the drawbacks of a chrono style watch is that essentially there are four watch movements within the case. Therefore the level of sophistication in terms of design and use of many more internal parts is required to manufacture a chrono vs a more standard style watch. IMO, chrono style watches are not nearly as durable as a more standard style watch both in terms of shock resistence and upkeep. Many owners experience a failure of one or more of the chonographs within a few years. If you do select a chrono for your watch, it is best not to keep the chronographs running unless you are using them for a purpose. Allowing the chronos to run in connection with every day use of the primary dial merely wears out the chronograph movements that much quicker.
Acquiring a well made sports watch wth a moving bezel provides the much of the ability to keep track of minutes (albeit, not as precise) and is much easier to see at night for more life experiences such as timing the meats cooking on the bbq, grass watereing, etc. Personally, I have owned three chronograph watches and was unhappy with all of them. First they tend to be big and clunky, have less reliability and each chrono was dfficult to see in in poor lighting or nightime conditions. In fact, the very worst watch I have ever owned was a Rolex Daytona Chronograph Stainless with a white dial and black dials for each chrono. Not only was this particular watch very hard to read the time under poor lighting conditions, but it lacks the day and date funcions which are essential to us Vintage members!
Outside at night, the face of the chrono was virtually impossible for functional use unless one carried a flashlight. But do not worry since they now are priced at approximately $12,000. Best to let some other rich chump enjoy the dumbest designed Rolex ever.
There is one other brand that I would recommend you investigate. The watch manufacturer's name is BAll. The founding principal behind these watches is to ensure that you are able to determine the time during the day and equally as well at night even in complete darkeness. The Ball watch line is one of the up and coming brand of watches and enjoy a certain flair and style to distinguesh itself from most other brands. The entire line of Ball waches incorporate the use of gas tubes for the some of the primary numbers on the face of the dial and adjacent to each of the other numbers on the dial. The gas tubes are guranteed to provide a consistent illumination level for 25 years. I recently acquired the Ball diving watch model and installed a stainless steel selp clasping band to it in place of the rubber strap that comes standard.
The ball diving watch has the same internal rotating bezel as found in the IWC Cousteau diving watch. It is one cool watch and it is so easy to read the time at night, it is scary. I have even used it to illuminate my entire front door lock so I did not have to fumble around trying to get the key in thel lock when I forgot the garage door opener battery was dead. Belive me, I am a watch nut and the ability to use the Ball watch at night is simply amazing. Insofar as Ball watches range in price between 1500 and 2500, they ara a very good deal for the quality, design, and durablitiy. At this price, you are able to wear a very attractive watch that is self winding, anti magnetic, water resistent to 300 meters, provide a day and date function, and keeps excellent time.
In the past month, more people have commented on the watch in my bars and during dinners at restaurants due to its handsome design and because they were curious as to why the could see the time on my watch better than on their own acress the table.
The history behind the creation of this company is quite interesting as well. Due to two trains colliding in the middle of the night in the early 1800's, the owner of the train company conducted an investigation and the results showed the cause was due to one of the dead train engineer's watch was six minutes behind real time. The rest is history. The brand is well made, highly respected, and is a very good value for the money.
Good luck with your investigation.

This is my watch... it would be hard for you to find one, unless you went through a vintage dealer like Bernard Watch Company, but worth it for the rarity and classic look imho.

It's a 1966 model 1500 with the SS riveted oyster bracelet, small clasp. Smooth bezel, silver oyster face, silver hands... clean and elegant, but takes a beating.

Ask Fillipe Massa for his Richard Mille. Every time I saw him in post-race interviews he had that honking-big tourbillion watch on display. I like 'em but I'm not about to buy a watch that costs some multiple of my car's price!
Man. All the watch whores already posted. HAHA.
You said you don't like Rolex, but one of my fav watches is the Rolex Air King. Its a clean classic design and goes well with all sorts of outfits and occasions. I don't wear it enough these days, but the color is awesome.
Not an "old fart" Rolex.... haha.

Let's not forget my new fav. line of watches.
The Seiko Spring Drive collection. For someone who can appreciate Honda Craftmanship over Mercedes and BMW. You could surely appreciate the Craftmanship of a Seiko over a Tag, Omega, or Rolex.
I personally haven't sprung for one yet, but one of the Spring Drives is at the TOP of my lists of future must haves.
Let's not forget that it was Timezone's watch of the year in 2005.
