Do it with vodka.
Couple of my college hallmates/friends tried this in a dorm with a pretty ghetto setup. But, the best way to do it is in a cooler with ice or place it in a fridge. You have to remember it'll take a few days to prepare in order to get the entire watermelon the way you want it.
Cut a small hole along the side of the watermelon, invert a handle of vodka into the hole and let it slowly seep in. Remember, it'll take some time for the watermelon to absorb the vodka so keep the setup in a cool place until it's ready.
After, cut and enjoy.

Nothing new, they've been "spiking" watermelons since Daniel Boone was around. Melons such as cantelope are good too.
It is easier and a more even flavor if you use a syringe and inject it in multiple places. You can get basting syringes at any grocery store.
Everclear or vodka is the lightest flavor but you can spike it with anything you like even flavored liquors.
It takes at least a day for the flavor to percolate to the nether regions of the watermelon

to op. don't waste good fruit. just take shots and chase with watermelon, otherwise u have a big watermelon full of nasty tasting vodka chunks. despite what a lot of people say, its pretty disgustting. if you cant taste the alcohol, chances are, it evaporated out.

Not sure what the ratio of watermelon:liquor is....but my guess is a large watermelon can eventually absorb a handles worth of vodka over a couple of days. 
Depending how much time your going to devote to this will determine the amount of alcohol absorbed into the melon.
