This question is for the guys out there that know a few things about web design etc...
I was assigned a new task at my job, the task is to update the organizations site but I really don't know jack of web design etc. I guess since I look like I know they pointed the fingers at me.
Anyways, the question is, what application is the easiest to create and nice looking site that can earn me a raise?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx.

However, I'd suggest going with one of the open source Content Managment Systems. Of all the versions out there, Mambo is my fav.

No HTML required, template based, and can be authored by groups. The hosting accounts I sell install the software and create the database automatically! All you have to do is log in to the admin section, choose a template, and start authoring.
PM if you want more info.
Cheers -
Oh, I forgot to mention why it's one of my favs......it's free.

Yeah, I've since learned why publisher is so bad.
What I don't understand is why I'm still having trouble with frontpage. It's my understanding that FP should work pretty well, but I'm still having problems with the page loading correctly on certain systems.

I occassionally receive spreadsheets and Word docs from clients and once I generate an HTML page from them I then have to strip all these tags from the page so that it will work correctly with the style sheet on their site and blend in uniformly with the rest of the site. It can be a real pain.
Re: your page not loading correctly on certain systems.
Can you elaborate? Do you mean certain browsers or certain computers? Send me the URL if you like and I'll take a look at it and tell you how to fix it.

From memory both FP and Publisher insert a lot of proprietary tags into the code. Trying to edit a Publisher generated page in another editor can be an exercise in frustration sometimes.

Basically, on PC the page renders perfectly in internet explorer. On firefox on PC, the page renders type and thumbnails correctly, but the graphics that I drew in FP don't show up. On a mac in IE, the text on the page gets all stretched out and starts to overlap. Basically just looks terrible and is completely illegible.

Any thoughts would be great!

I knocked up a couple of very elementary examples of your 'index' and 'tiffany' pages.

A very basic style sheet is included. I haven't tested them however they should display fine on all platforms.
Feel free to use as templates if you like. If you use them you will need to create the graphics for each page as images and insert them.
i viewed the source on that page and it does look crazy.. way more complicated than it needs to be with a simply designed page.
see.. you use a microsoft program... it only works on IE.. hehe..

I say pay someone $500 then say you did it! The raise is worth your $500 investment no?

Use Dreamweaver MX (I can point you at a very cheap version of it
) the learning curve isn't bad at all. While it's not perfect, it's probably the closest thing we have to it out of the dfferent WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) software. How fancy do you need to get with the site? There was a suggestion earlier to use a CMS, but that may be a little bit past your skillset (for now). Plus it depends on what your web host provides - for dynamic stuff you'll need things like PHP or ASP and (My)SQL or Access.BruteHareS2k, you can PM me anytime you need help with anything or have any questions (that goes for everyone).
Replicating his front page and one subsidiary page was literally a 10 minute job.
If all he wants is the same simple and minimal site he has there now then a lot less than $400 would see him through.
CMS, database backend and the like would be overkill at this stage unless the intentions for that site are for it to be quite large, which I don't think they are.
