There's more than a stereotype going on here. The type of person attracted to law enforcement is already on a mild power trip by definition ("I want to enforce the law.").
Are all police officers bad people? No. But the percentage has to be higher than a general public cross-section. Power corrupts.

If you've got the grades and tenacity, and want to uphold the law, you often go into the legal profession.
If you don't quite pass muster, but you need a career, you wind up in law enforcement.
The older I get, and the more lawyers I know, the less I'm worried about cops. It's gotten to the point where most cops see me and know that I'm the kind of trouble they don't want (read: someone who not only knows their rights, but can and will drag them on the coals about it).

Where the hell was the Manager? He could've very easily came over and explained to the cop that there were no twenties in the register.
