what is *your* purpose in life?
when you think about it objectively, doesn't the purpose of raising your children seem repetitive or redundant, like a wheel doing just another rotation? but when you're in there, it means everything. we're slaves to our genes; *ucking mind control.

Hmm... I can honestly tell you that I don't think that I actually have a purpose in life. I have goals, such as: being financially sound, retiring early, getting married, having a kiddo or two, etc, etc... but I don't think I have any sort of larger purpose. I know I won't cure cancer. I doubt I'll do anything significant for which someone may someday name a high school after me, and I'm OK with that.
However, I do have a wish to be happy and enjoy life. And I can tell you that the times that I've been happiest in life were the same times that I was experiencing as much as the world has to offer. I can easily pinpoint the 3 months of my life that I was happiest, and I can explain to you why.
It was summer of 1994. I had just completed my junior year in high school. My parents paid for me to go on a 16-day "educational tour" of Europe. My best friend was in the group of people that were going, and we had a blast. We spent two weeks travelling from place to place seeing the highlights of what Europe had to offer... from Mount Pilatus in Switzerland to the Colosseum in Rome to the Sistine Chapel to the canals of Venice to Versailles to the Eiffel Tower. During the day, we'd see the sights and at night we'd party, chill out, visit with the locals or whatever. We probably averaged about 3 hours of sleep each night.
After I returned from the Europe trip, I attended an 8-week summer course at Harvard University (it was a special program that allowed secondary school students to take courses alongside the regular Harvard students). That was an amazing experience because I was surrounded by some of the smartest people I had ever met (not a huge feat considering the hick town from which I hale, but that's beside the point).
So, why was this the best time of my life? Easy. Awesome experiences with awesome people. And I think that's the key to happiness. Surround yourself with people you love, people that amaze you, people that are good and true. And see things that you haven't seen before. Do things that you haven't done before. Be somewhere that you haven't been before. Live. And then you'll be happy.

[QUOTE=Scot,Feb 21 2008, 11:55 AM] Every day I basically go to work, workout at the gym at lunch, come home, Piss around around with my kids then go to bed......
I have started to do some volenteering but really isn't filling my desire to have some kind of purpose......... WTF is the purpose / goal of a normal life?
Kind of like the Godfathers song YOU TUBE LINK -->BIRTH SCHOOL WORK DEATH - GODFATHERS
Shouldn't there be a different goal for everyone?
