lol Scot, I can't believe you just said that. Whether these criminals or whatever hypocrites go to church or not has really nothing to do with you. Nobody ever said they are heading down a better path either. Religion never said you'll be transformed a flawless humans if you believe in it. I do see a lot of people out there saying "oh this religion consists of this and that type of bad people, thus this religion is bad." No please. Anyways, I think what QUIKAG trying to say is it's real hard to find a purpose in your life that's something earthly. If you don't believe it, keep trying. By no means I'm trying to start any religious discussion again. I'm out of this place as well since I somehow think this thread will end up nasty.

just messing.....
I am clearly not religious and I have no problems with anyone who is as long as they are true. My little brothers are very religious but they also don't litter, don't lie and don't try to **** the next guy like lots of church going folks.
I don't think anyone should be judged differently based on whether they attened church or not.... lots of good people don't go to church, lots of good people do go to church...
enough about that....
Okay.... i just started this to see where people where headed... i would hate to look back in another 10 years and realize that all i ahve really done is gone to work, played with my kids and slept.....
I stay in good shape (to not cause a burden on the hospital system), I have done a fair amount more volenteering than i used to, I give shit away..... but for some reason I feel like I need to do more in life.....
to each their own.....

Hey Scot
If there is a purpose to life, it's reproduction. You're doing that. Everything else is subjective. Live life to enjoy it and let that enjoyment take you where it will.
Don't do stuff because someone lays a guilt trip on you religous or otherwise. That's their thing. Do your own.
When that feeling hit me, I got involved with food banks, feeding hungry people regardless of who or what they are was my way of resolving it. That led to yoko ono promoting rock concerts and all kinds of crazy things I never thought I do.
In my book if there's a subjective meaning to life it's to enjoy it your way not someone elses.

Maybe the rest of us just haven't realized yet that we haven't done, and aren't going to do, shit in this lifetime. But, I'm satisfied enough at the moment, though I wish I had made different career decisions along the way.

Scot,
I've done a little bit of investigating on this subject...
I've literally read dozens of books and been to seminars covering everything from Budhism to Integral Spirituality to everything in between.
I'm curious about my purpose too. Carl Jung is a great read on this point. He believed most all psychosis were from being forced to do something different with your life (rather you force it on yourself or it is forced on you by someone else) than your true calling. If you want a better idea of your true calling, take a jung personality profile test (readily available on the web, just look up Jung personality test).
I've always been jealous of people that just always knew what they wanted to do (doctors seem to fall in this category). It's not that I'm not willing to change jobs, I just don't know for sure what I would go do even with the freedom to go do it.
What I have learned from everything from Christ to Budhism is that finding peace and happiness is a choice. Life itself is an incredible, incredible blessing and opportunity. You have time to spend with your kids every evening. ENJOY every second of it. Become fascinated with them and everything they are learning. Don't think of it as a chore, but rather as an opportunity to participate in the incredible development of a child.
I've got lots more recommendations on books, etc. if you want to PM me.
If you want a happier more purposeful life, I know a GREAT place to start. Turn off the TV. Now. Unplug the goddamned thing and read to yourself and your kids.
I'm not a guru (far from it), just a regular guy going through the same stuff.
