As far as living in an apartment, I would go to the Humane Society and try to find an older dog that is less in need of activity, because young dogs get bored and may tear into stuff. An older dog will sleep more but still be able to guard the apartment, plus you would be giving a home to a dog that needs one.
I am not a big dog guy because most big dogs have, well, there own special scent. Smaller dogs are less stinky but less intimidating to an intruder. But sled dogs are supposed to lack cetain glands that most other breeds have so that they don't have that big dog smell. Something about different skin adapted to getting in and out of water in very cold climates. That might make a Husky or Malmute a good option for guarding the house without the extra stink.
I also find in between baths a good spritzing with Fabreeze does wonders for my dog.
Heffer, larger dogs tend to be less active. Technically it is more humane to keep a giant breed in an apartment than an active smaller dog.
I also vote for a small noisy dog but your neighbors will hate you and if a burglar decides to ignore the dog he can. The opposite end of the scale is some sort of bull terrier or Akita. Quieter but can do massive damage to an intruder.
Any of the miniature or toy dogs would be perfect because of their nasty temper toward strangers. Mini-pinischer/schnauzer/poodle would probably be appropriate. I had a bassett hound in my last apartment, which is a fairly big dog with a deep voice, but smells very doggy and needs lots of running room.
^ oh, I think if you go to animalplanet.com or one of those websites there is a "pet finder" questionaire. Basically you answer questions and it tells you what breeds of dogs are good for you. An English bulldog might be good as well since they shouldn't be out in the hot sun too much anyway. Not sure about space requirements though...
This is STARR our 9 almost 10 month old White German Shepherd. She will let you know when anything enters her domain (anything within earshot). She is happy to lay about or play all day long. She does like long walks though.
