A large Burmese, Reticulated, or African Rock Python. All you need to do is find a spray can of "Rat Scent" and rig it to spray at the door when it opens. No mess to clean up, no investigators to call, no police reports to file, an no need to spend money feeding the snake for a couple of months.

There is a difference between watchdog ability and protection ability. If you want a watchdog, go pick up one of the yappy toy breeds. If you want protection, get something with teeth, not just attitude.

You may want to head to your local bookstore and take a look at the "Encyclopedia Of Dog Breeds."

It offers an opinion on hundreds of dogs based on several criteria including excercise requirements, watchdog ability and ease of training.

Well, if you already have a smaller dog, who can act as an alarm, I'd suggest signing up for self-defense classes. Learning to defend yourself in any situation (including home invasion) is an invaluable skill. Dogs are great, but they aren't with you everywhere. Losing the fear of being defenseless against attackers helps you react to a dangerous situation better than a reliance on a dog, pepper spray, other weapon, etc.

Lhaso Apso ( sp?) are good watch dogs, we had one, and he was like an alarm system.

The Tibetan Monks used them to guard the monestaries.

Look. All you need to do is get some neuticles for your little chi dog and that little f-er will have a MEAN bark! I hope he's a boy to begin with but having a plastic nutsack should do just the trick...you can check it out here: http://www.neuticles.com/index1.html

Big dogs are irrelevant after you've done this to your dog...hehe.
