"Best" route is relative. If you want to get there fast, take I5. If you want one of the most scenic drives in the world, take highway 1.

Time stuff around traffic, or you'll spend a good chunk sitting and taking in the scenic view of an H2 in front of you.

The Redwood forest is north of the city, that's nice to go to. The towns north of SF (Sausalito, Tiburon) are small but nice, with good restaurants.

I couldn't think of a better place to visit. Gotta go by the pier and ashbury park.

when i visited there, i went to this awesome hawaiian restaurant, forgot where.

also, i went to the japanese tea garden, pretty cool.

and on my way there, a bunch (at least 50 of them) of people were playing the bongos together,l with the obligatory hippie chicks dancing without shoes. if that's you scene, check it out

embarcadero, fishermans' wharf, pier 39, alcatraz........some pretty good restaurants around fishermans' wharf..

Go for the 49-Mile Scenic Drive, it'll cover all of the major turist points in San Francisco.
