What do you call these goofy things?
i don't know what you call them, but my mom used to make them when i was a kid. they're pretty easy to make.
1. buy a pack of wonton skins from the supermarket. (you don't necessarily need to go to an asian market for these. today, you can find them in the tofu section of american supermarkets--at least the ones in metropolitan areas.)
2. for each "bowtie", take 2 pieces of wonton skins, keeping them together.
3. fold the wonton skins in half. use a scissor or knife and cut a perpendicular slit down the folded edge. it works best when this cut is half the length of the folded half.
4. unfold the wonton. you should have a slit in the middle of the wonton skins.
5. with the slit pointing up and down, take either the top half or bottom half and slip it through the slit. slightly pull on both the top and bottom half and make adjustment to the bowtie till it looks good to you. when making adjustment, you most likely will want to slightly pinch the middle and spread the ends to form a "bowtie".
6. take a pot and pour some oil it in, enough to deepfry the bowties. set the heat on high till the oil is hot, then slightly reduce the heat by about a third to a half to prevent burning.
7. place the bowties in the hot oil and deep fry till they are the color you see in the picture above. you might need to turn them a few times for best results.
8. take the bowties out, place them on paper towel, and while still hot, sprinkle sugar on both sides.
9. remove sugared bowties from paper towel, share them with friends and family, and enjoy.

VTEC_Junkie, that was a great explanation and from your post, I'm going to assume that there really is no english translation for what to call them, at least, not just a simple one. I guess "bowties" will have to do as that is what my neighbour knows them as.
Zangerzone, they are too good tasting to give to beggars. Also, they are not very healthy. It would be like giving a hungry begger a bag of potato chips. They're almost like junk food.
