I have an old 318ic for DD duty ($43 to fill up) and my commute is not too bad...so I if gas gets to the 8 or 9/gallon range then I just may start looking at a better gas sipper as a DD, or at other transportation methods..telecommuting is looking better and better...

 

i wish i could tele-commute, but in my field you have to be there(work).

i was looking at scooters, and maybe a 318/civc gas sipper that me and the wife could use, but the cost of insuraning a 3rd car would null the saving in fuel.

That's $2727 per year.

Also assuming I have an extra $10k I put into savings/retirement each year, I can spend up to $12,727 per year on gas. That yieldss a max price of $18.67 wihout changing current spending habits. Of course, I'd be eating into my retirement a lot, so I'd likely change my driving behavior a long time before then.

So lets say I want to keep at least $5000/year for retirement, meaning the limit would be $11.33/gal.

 

Working from home more now, and shifting earlier on the commute. But fun rides in the hills are unaffected; 2 hours in the S costs about, what, 8 gallons? $32? Worth it. I just wish I could get the wife to trade in the Liberty for a CR-V or Civic, but it's almost paid for anyways so it would be kinda dumb. But it's our last truckish SUV.

 

I have to drive about 17 miles to work each way, I spend about 80 bucks a week on gas (unless I sit my ass home over the weekend). I've been considering to buy a gas saver like a Toyota Yaris but it would be so damn hard to let it go so I'm having a VERY hard time deciding what I should do.

 

Your math seems off. You tank up twice a week?

I drive 20 miles each way to work, 5 days a week (until my internet is set up at the new house and I can work from home,) which is about 200 miles. My S takes about 11 gallons of gas, and gets about 21mpg, so that's about 1 tank a week. 11 gallons x $4/gal = $44.

How are you spending twice that? That's A LOT of weekend driving.

 

in the past two weeks yes, but if I don't do anything on the weekend then yeah I spend about 45 bucks

 

I just bought a 96 saturn for $800 to drive daily. average 40mpg.... its not a bad thing to drive a piece of crap knowing whats at home in the garage! i think i would really cut back at $8-10...

I might have to hit one of the local Amish farms and buy a one horse and buggy for local travel.
