at&t uses all 4 frequencies of GSM.

850 and 1900 in the US.

900 and 1800 everywhere else.

at&t's map on 850mhz GSM (provided by GSM World)

at&t maps on 1900mhz GSM (provided by GSM World)

I work for T-Mobile USA. Here's a great link to supported phones. T-Mobile's Tech Support actually allows "unsupported devices" onto our network and will help a customer set them up. A reported 10% of our customer base have phones that were never designed for the US market.

^If anything...that link will help you determine somegood GSM model phones that will work on at&t or T-Mobile since both of us work on the same GSM frequencies. Only note that the 3G networks use a different operating frequency between at&t and T-Mobile (that means an Apple iPhone 3G won't work on T-Mobile's 3G network...but will work on T-Mobile's EDGE network which is slower than 3G).

hey, thanks for the valuable info.
I am not seeing LG listed on the site though.......i had the "shine" before but the ones i am seeing on ebay are not listed as working with the 850 frequency so i gotta keep looking for one that has 850 and 1900 correct????? if it only has 1900 and 1800(????) it wont work then?

T-Mobile doesn't carry LG phones (they are great phones, we just don't sell 'em)...if it doesn't have 850mhz, then it won't "read" or pick up on the 850mhz frequency. It'll work...it will just be spotty in some areas because you are limiting yourself to just 1 band...

at&t: 3g depending on where you are: 850/1900
at&t: edge depending on where you are: 850/1900

tmo: 3G, not many places have it yet and it's an odd frequency: 2100 down/1900 up? something like that
tmo: edge: 1900 only, except sometimes (very rarely) do you get 850 on roaming

i've had many tri-band phones (mostly euro. phones with 900/1800/1900) on both at&t and t-mobile and they work fine. but if you're on at&t, i'd suggest finding one with 850/1900 to take advantage of the 850 band.

What's the frequency Kenneth?

The title of the song is not original to the band, which guitarist Peter Buck explains in the liner notes to In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988
