This is what hit us yesterday...

Gander got the brunt of the latest winter storm to hit the island, receiving 37 centimetres of new snow yesterday. 30 centimetres of snow fell at St. Lawrence, and 28 centimetres in the St. John's area. Meteorologist Herb Thoms with the Gander Weather Centre says a low pressure system from off the Carolina coast brought snow and very high winds to most of the island. The strongest winds were reported in St. Lawrence with gusts of up to 172 kilometres per hour. Thoms says the island can expect more snow tomorrow as another system moves into the area, bringing with it 10 centimetres of snow for the Avalon. Thoms says the snow will continue for the Avalon Friday and Saturday.
High winds at St. John's International Airport yesterday resulted in damage to a Purolater Courier plane. A spokesman with the Airport Authority says the winds were so high, the 727 spun around and hit a Provincial Airlines hanger. Winds at the airport yesterday were clocked at 78 knots or 144 kilometres per hour.
I got stuck in this and we literally had zero visibility while driving. I couldn't see where I was driving at all - I got temporarily lost trying to pull out of the work parking lot! I've been in bad storms but this was the absolute worst. Occasionally you could see lights from another vehicle, but I was typically travelling in first gear and occasionally second, at speeds of 15 kph or less (under 9mph). The picture at that link doesn't do justice - that was probably taken near the end, when things were considerably better. Absolutely amazing how impossible it was to see where you were going. Everyone from work left at the same time so that no one would get lost trying to find the main road. Insanity. Thank God I'm leaving Friday for a vacation (to a place more cold, but with less snow and wind....I hope).

hehehe Calgary has been a little weird lately... lots of snow, then warm enough to melt it, then lots of snow, then freezing cold, then more snow and then hot enough to turn it all into slush... it's weather by Cybil

This just isn't fair!
I do have a chance to move to Cali or Texas and I definitely have a shot at going to Louisiana if I want. Perhaps one day we'll meet, hopefully driving the same car...at the start of a fun stretch of asphalt...beautiful girl next to each of us...living our lives one twisty road at a time.

BTW, just read your profile... You like karting? We just converted an electric golf kart into a gas-powered beast. It's now running an 18hp V-twin via 3-speed clutchless chain-drive.
After a few days of putting around, we've decided it's not powerful enough, so we're switching to an 133hp Ford 1.1-liter inline-4 (from Formula Ford back in the day). Not yet sure on our gearbox setup - still on the drawing boards.

I dated a girl in LA for quite a while - I hated summers there, though winters are good (if you call "no snow, nothing below freezing" a winter). I'd prefer Cali but it's so expensive, and Texas isn't too bad as long as I can live outside of the city.
Yeah, I love karting. My Dad has four (I think - last time I counted that's what he had), including a shifter kart (top speed 120+mph) and three less insane machines (anywhere from 5 to 18hp, I think). I used to have one myself, but after cracking the chassis four times driving it on dirt and hitting rocks I had to let it go (to a welder, no less). I'm hoping to race someday in karts though my Dad wants to take me down to a professional racing school to see if I'm as good in a "real" racecar as I am in a kart. Personally, I think I'm merely above average (but no genius) but I'm not turning down a chance at a week of racing! Skip Barber, anyone?
That is insane - a 4-cyl with 133hp in a golf kart?!? 18hp is probably excessive (I'd hate to see what you do to fairways ), but 133hp is going to get someone killed. You probably won't even have traction in any gear. You obviously have too much free time on your hands, too.
