I don't do astroimaging. (They don't say astrophotography anymore.) A good CCD (charge coupled device) imaging system is around $10,000 -- plus a lot of work. I just observe. By the way, the CCD format was the forerunner for today's digital cameras -- same principle. I do hang out at Mt. Pinos ( a mountain outside LA with incredibly clear skies) a fair amount. The preeminent amateur astroimagers in the world have a sort of observing fraternity there. I'm in absolute awe of those dudes. They're doing things that only professional astronomers with research-grade observatory-based telescopes could do a few years ago.
