What Watch do you wear in the S2000?
I posted too quickly.
don't get me wrong guys, but I was actually pricing some Jaeger-LeCoultre watches and for an in-house manufacture watch, their prices weren't terrible.
Omega is a well-known good deal, I've just never liked their design.
Rolex may have hype, but their movements are known to be bulletproof, and keep very very good time, particularly the Cal. 3135. these things just keep going and going. they make the largest number of certified chronometers in the industry. they've earned their reputation. (many of their watches, I don't like the styling of... except the Submariner.)
also, for all three listed above, their cases are really well made.
now, I'm not trying to come across as elitist-- heck, I sport an Oris Williams F1 Day-Date-- which comes in at around $800-$900. uses a standard ETA movement. but the case is very well made, it has the display that I look for (day+date), and is a good deal for the price.
TAG cases IMO are not a good deal for the price. couple that with the fact that they use the same ~$60 ETA or Valjoux movement as most every other watch, and they don't make the cut for me, considering the prices charged by them.
Panerai is joke, and Anonimo is the redheaded step-child of that joke.

no disrespect (and mav, congrats on your upcoming wedding)... but steven975, mav-- TAGs are all hype, no substance. they're ridiculously overpriced for the quality they offer, and are all about their excellent advertising campaign, and virtual ubiquity in retail stores. they use very common, mass produced movements, and the quality of their cases is sub-par.
TAG
and while I'm on the subject...
Panerai
and Anonimo
x3
well made watches that are fairly reasonably priced (these are all jewelry anyway right? they do the same things as a Swatch digital... but it's all about the workmanship and design)
Rolex (such as the stainless steel Submariner
)
Jaeger-LeCoultre

Omega (although I don't really like their watches that much)
there are more, but those are off the top of my head

Whether you like it or not, a watch is a piece of jewelry. It does have some function, but when you move beyond your entry-level quartz. It is little more than arm candy with few relevant functions greater than appearance.
Yes, some can be marvels of micro machinery, and belong in a different class. But your basic $2000 watch is not. In that sense, they are all overpriced and nothing more than marketing hype.
Maybe that marketing hype works. I, for one, like to support the companies that support things that interest me. Both Tag and Omega support motorsports. I appreciate that. When I see someone wearing an Omega Speedmaster, I think, "Hmmmm, he must be a car guy." I own a Speedmaster and a Carrera for what they connote. Both designs are influenced by cars and racing. That reflects me, my personality and interests.
Is a Panerai a "better" watch? Maybe from a mechanical standpoint, but when I put that oversized plate on my undersized wrist, I look like a damn clown. A definite criterion when I purchase a watch, car, wheels etc...is appearance. So what I am saying is a watch purchase is a decision based on tangible and intangible criteria. Sometimes a watch from a "common...overpriced" manufacturer fits just right.
I woun't consider all of TAGs casings cheap. I have seen some of their lower priced models with plastic-steel casings, which does seem kind of cheap for $800. Mine is all steel, with a nice brushed finish. While no rolex, it isn't a Fossil either.
As evidenced by the lively discussion, it comes down to a matter of personal taste... and hopefully with the presumption that you are aware and informed of your purchase/selection.
That being said, I was very attracted to the TAG Kirium series and specifically the Ti5 model because it was designed by one of my favorite artists: Jorg Hysek. He was innovative with his carbon fiber pen designs and so when TAG introduced his Kirium style watch made of titanium and carbon-fiber, I was compelled to purchase it.
My next watch will likely be an IWC.

once again, an example where they may use ETA movements (although they try to disguise that fact) but also have superbly designed/made cases and metal bracelets.
a bit out of my price range currently though.
omega speedmaster professional sapphire back (not that crap common shizzle, but the lemania movement baby)
btw, tags suck in general, but i do like their classic line... e.g. monaco with leather strap. i'd never buy one, though.
next watch will be the pepsi GMT II.

also.. tritium. i agree w/ you on TAG but disagree on Rolex. ive had numerous Rolex and the only positive thing about rolex are that their movement have amazing torque and power. which in the long run are amazing. as they will stay within COSC for YEARS! without an adjustment.
never been one for omega/JLC.. but my collection will show you what i favor.

My Omega SMP...

This past weekend I presented my fiancee with a vintage Omega that my Dad left for me. According to the story, the watch is at least 32 years old, could be 50. Its a De Ville Saphette manual wind, 18 kt gold case, 10 kt gold filled bracelet. Its in prestine condition and despite being only serviced once almost a decade ago, it still works! And not only does it still work, it works good. I set the time to match my Seamaster, which runs about 0.5 seconds fast per day, checked it two days later and it was perfect. Amazing!

To give you an idea of how tiny this amazing little watch is, look at this photo next to its big brother.

Omega rocks.
