Default What went very wrong with the radio?

Growing up in the 70's and 80's it seemed you could turn on any rock radio station and not go wrong. From Bob Seger,Foreigner,Boston,Van Halen,Pat Benatar,Heart,KISS, ELO,Aldo Nova,KIX,Triumph,Cinderella,KEEL,etc . It just went on and on and on with what I called "The Jam". Then one day not too long after Firehouse and Steelheart were the last of the line and then Grunge hit and now the music on the radio just Sucks big time. A buddy of mine that feels the same way calls the radio music now "Vomit Rock" cause he wants to puke after hearing it.
I had dial up internet for 10 years and just now upgraded to high speed and have spent the last 3 months on Youtube and found KICK ASS tunes just like they Used to play on Radio. I found out about bands like Treat,Reckless Love,Heat,WET,Bullet for my Valentine,First Signal ,Steel Panther and some good Christian Rock with Fireflight and Day of Fire. Now it leads me to wonder why in the hell don't they play this REAL music on the radio . I would love to hear Steel Panthers"Death to all but Metal" played everyday for years as to what we think about the other types of music! Yeah no more doggie-doo!
Straight up rock and Headbanging . It is time to bring it back Big Time!
What the hell went wrong. Why did the radio stop playing real rock and roll?

wait... youve had dial up for the past 10 years? i didnt know they offered that anymore!

while lots of new music does indeed suck, you gotta admit, with your love of 'the jam', and your internet that goes "beeeeeee doooo deeee do deee do deeeeeeep boooooooo beeeeeeee", you might be living in the past a little...

Gotta agree with the first response.

OP: It's called getting old; next you'll be pining for the "good ol' days"; and remembering when you were a kid; and chasing little bastardos off your lawn; and saying they don't make things like they used to.

Rock's last gasp as a mainstay was the early 90s, and now its all pop again. If it comes in waves, it will gain a resurgence again - remember the pop wave of the 80's? You couldn't find rock on the radio then either. There are plenty of rock bands and artists out there even now; they just don't get the radio play because of how the music industry operates and its not "in fashion" right now.

The good news is, good rock never gets old - you can always listen to it.

The op sounds like my friend. But he has been unemployed for ten years, wears zubas and old black Iron Maiden t-shirts.

Not exactly who the marketing muckety mucks want to focus group.

I agree radio is bad, but I am not liking your alternative.

Best station I ever heard was on Maui, don't know what it was but it had lots of faster modern punky rock like Blink, through in some eclectic Daft Punk, and then some Bob Marley.

Wierd mix, but for driving around in the island sun it was great.

The autotune lame hip hop r&b trend is HORRIBLE. And may Gaga die in a crash.

Nope you are wrong! There are bands on youtube that have come out in the last few years that are just like the "Good old stuff" and yet they will not play them on the radio and will play a bunch of crap artists with no talent. It seems the less talent a band has now the bigger they are! WTF? To me they are force feeding a bunch of crap down the radio listeners throat!
For me dial up was half the price of high speed! I am all about being frugal that is why I have no kids,no pets, and no cell phone! Save money for things I WANT!
I talked to a teacher the other day and said all her kids were into the 80s music big time. She also said they even had an 80s themed prom and these were high school aged kids.
My ex had XM in her car for a while and the "Boneyard" station knew how to rock and even heard stuff I had never before heard like Rob Rock and Axel Rudi Pell. Good rock is out there but you got to hunt for it now because the radio sure as hell ain't gonna be playing it . WTF?
Vader you obviously did not listen to Steel Panthers "Death to all but Metal " because they knew what to do with blink 182! You are obviously not on the same page here! Bob Marley is ok but not what I call the REAL ROCK I am talking bout! Looked up your Daft punk and thought it was the second coming of Disco
Here is a band with album released in 2010 and I could listen to this all day long! HEAT -Living in a Memory Hell I am blown away by Actual Guitar in the first 30 secondS!

The only way to get played on a commercial station is to be backed by a large record label and have big-time promoters. Playlists on commercial radio stations are dictated by corporate headquarters, and we all know that art suffers when the suits make the decisions. It's a corporate racket, kind of like the movie "Airheads".

Internet radio and college/indie stations aren't restricted by suits so they can play whatever they want.
