I would avoid obviously hammered girls at a bar, but just because someone goes to a bar on the weekend with friends is no reason to decide they are lacking some attractive qualities. Most bars are public places where friends get together to socialize, play pool, darts, pinball, etc., and meet people. Most people in bars drink various kinds of alcoholic beverages. It is considered bad form to go to a bar and get absolutely hammered, despite what you might have learned in college. There is absolutely nothing wrong with going to a bar to meet people. Some bars are better for this than others, of course.

 

Huge ditto. You can meet a total freak at a religious event and you can meet the girl of your dreams at a bar. You just don't know where it will happen.

This might get me flamed, but I think the reason some men advise not to meet women at a bar is a projection of their own intentions when they go out to the bars. Not everyone goes to a bar looking to hookup and not everyone at church is someone you want to grow old with.

I (humbly ) consider myself at least a decent 'catch', and consider my girlfriends to be also... We enjoy going out for a few drinks, being social and doing some dancing. We're also huge sports fans and meet every week *at a bar* to watch Monday Night Football, NBA Playoffs, etc. We never go to the bars looking to meet someone, but if it happened we wouldn't discount it simply because it happened at a bar. Nor would we give any man more credence simply because we met them at a religious or cultural event. Or the grocery store. How ridiculous!

As for online dating... from a woman's perspective (and corroborated from girlfriends all over the country) online dating is a wasteland. I don't think any woman I know has had a positive experience with any online dating site in the last couple years. Seems like people looking online are only interested in a quick hookup. Now why would a woman pay a monthly membership fee for that? According to just about piece of advice related to meeting women I have read on this board they can get it for free down at the local bar.

I think it is true that when I am not looking, I find better people... desperation sometimes blinds people..
