Depends on the celeb/musician

Harrison Ford vs Dave Grohl - Harrison Ford would get my vote.

I think actors are bigger in general [more press, more money], but musicians have a better chance of transcending pop culture and entering social consciousness.

Everybody will remember and probably still listen to Michael Jackson,The Beatles, Nirvana, Metallica, etc. in 20 years because they changed the landscape of music, but very few movies and actors have really changed and influenced movies to the same degree. And those that have, don't seem to get the regard.

Why don't we throw athletes in the mix? I think music + sports produces bigger stars than acting.

2 most international stars that come to my mind = MJ & the other MJ.

Actors are more visual and you know what they all look like. Musicians are sold on how they sound, not necessarily how they look. Ergo, chances are that an actor is more easily recognized on the street and therefore is a bigger "celebrity" to Joe Blow walking down the street.

Actors hands down. Just compare the worlds viewing of the oscars with the grammys.
