i have xp pro on my desktop and xp home on my laptop...the only differnce between the 2 xps (if you were wondering which one to get) is that home has a lot more games and stuff on it. the pro is better for just doing work and no play. it is so much more stable than any other windows...my computer used to have a mind of its own and when it didnt want to do anything it would turn itself off all the time..i havent had the prob since i switched to xp when it first came out. also when you defrag your computer you dont have to be in safe mode.

I think the big difference is that XP home doesn't support domains..

I ordered a Dell computer recently and it came with XP installed. I had a lot of experience with every Windows OS up to date, but had never used XP, so I decided to play with it for a while to see if I liked it. I kid you not I played with it less than 5 minutes before I got fed up with it, reformatted the computer, and installed a fresh copy of Windows 2000 Pro. I don't know what it was about it but I just got pissed off at it. It didn't crash or anything, I guess its just that I really disliked the cutesy interface, hated the fact that I would get silly warning messages whenever I would try to do anything, and it simply did not really provide anything for me that Win2K doesn't. If you ask me, Windows 2000 is the only way to go in terms of Microsoft OS's for the time being. It's not that all that hard to learn and is pretty stable.

I'm a big fan of WinXP myself. At first, I wanted to rip it out and shove 2k pro back in, but lacking that option at the time, i just dealt with it. It kinda grows on you, and now i wouldn't want to go back to 2k pro. The "cutesy" interface is gone with a few click (set it back to "classic look" or whatever), along with anything else you don't want. What's nice aobut it is that it has the power/stability/flexibility of 2k pro, with some additional nice timesavers and features (auto update and such..)

The trick lies in customizing it for your personal tastes, which can take a fair ammount of time and effort, but it's worth it once you've done it.

I'm debating on whether to upgrade to XP or not right now. I have Windows 2000 now and love it. XP just seems to be such a resource hog. You need 128 MB of RAM just to meet the minimum requirements.

Probably not worth the hassle to upgrade from 2k, but I don't think it's a huge hog (at least not any more than any other windows). I have 256 MB and I can pretty much run anything on it without any problems...

XP runs way faster than 2000. If you've had any experience with Windows, you should be able to customize XP to your EXACT needs. Keep in mind XP Home edition is not as capable as XP Professional. It's like the difference between 98 and 2000. If you have Home edition, get a copy of Professional; or don't complain.

The only reason we aren't running XP here at work is because of a few kinks that has to do with backward compatibility (plus the fact that our staff doesn't know XP that well and training would be $$).

You should have ABSOLUTELY no trouble with XP. If you're gripe is that it's too cutesy, then you need to "tinker" more with the OS. You can make it look like whatever you want it to. Looks shouldn't be the primary concern of a power user anyways.
