Default Who would go?

Who would sign up for the armed forces if actual full scale war broke out? I personally could not sit by and allow my fellow americans to die without helping out. I have a great job (ASIC Design Engineer). I have a great g/f, family, life, but I could not look myself in the mirror knowing my fellow americans were dying, while I was sitting at home watching it on TV.

I don't know what I would do... I figure with my education I might get set up with some sort of communications job. But, I think I would almost prefer to fight. I know I have never been in a War and it would be scary as hell. maybe I would chicken out, but I think it would be my duty as an US Citizen to go and fight. I wouldn't want to wait to get drafted if it got to that point. I would want to go under my own free will. We all have to die someday. I would rather die fighting, then hiding. How do you guys feel about this?

I would rather put this in the american tragedy thread, but respect the fact that is for finding lost loved ones.
Erik

The same thought crossed my mind too. I'm in the IT field now. I wouldn't be anything but infantry.

Well, I actually used to work on missiles and other weapons systems. I'd probably go back to work at the defense contractor to see if I could help them do anything. A lot of people can fight, but not many people can help design and create weapons.

I did the same thing--mainly anti-armor, anti-helicopter, and so on--and now I'm back at it, although in a different capacity. I agree with Mark: our best use wouldn't be carrying a weapon; it would be designing better weapons for our soldiers to carry.

Trust me, I would be giving up my comfy life to go back to work for a defense contractor. I just feel that I can do more by helping out there than I can by carrying a gun.
