Actually compared to the work that servers do, we do more work.

They are handed a trey with the food on it and have to hand it out, we have to burn ourselves getting it off the hot plates it's sold to us on, box it, bag it, all the while keeping track of 6-15orders varying in size from 1app to 15 entres or more. When I have four lines on hold, 20 orders in the back, and 8 cars circling in the parking lot, my job gets a little hectic.... not deserving tips in ridiculous.

Servers have 2-3 tables, and refill drinks. We both know the menu. I make more money in a single night than any server because I get 3x the sales, but I'm only making tips once or twice a week because there are five togo guys splitting the week up.

The difference between us and fast food is that we know the menu, we have the food prepared for you the exact same way as the server, we get the food the same way (on hot plates), only instead of bringing it to a table we bring it to a car.

i consider myself a pretty good tipper, however because im black i feel that some wait staff generalize me by my appearance and thus give me shitty service. you know, thinking that i won't leave a tip. well guess what? for your shitty service you get a shitty tip. it could easily get cyclical...

i hate when i go into a place say like hooters, where some of those chics feel like they are entitled to a tip. they give me lousy service but expect me to leave them a tip because they think they're cute. look, i don't care what you have on or how much you make an hour, my tip is strictly contingent on the service i receive, period. to think otherwise is unjustifiable to me.
That's what I always theorized, some times I get good tips from Black People, other times I don't, it's the same with White People. I try to give the best service across the board. Rednecks and ghetto Black People don't tip the same way that middle to upper class Black/White people do, but sometimes I'm surprised both positively and negatively.

It's like the whole chicken and the egg thing.

.... and the gratuity added to large parties is usually 15% before tax, before the amount they are REQUIRED to take out for the bussers/hosts/etc. At my store we servers have to take out 3% of their sales regardless of tip, so if they aren't tipped it costs them money to serve you.

If you don't think you get paid enough, then get another job. Nobody is forcing people to be waiters.

Do you really expect a 15% tip for doing to-go? Wow, you throw everything in a bag. I do to-go most of the time because I don't want to have to leave a tip and deal with waiting for a table and then waiting for the food.
togos are not just throw in the bag and finish. consider the time packing the food, utensiles, sauces, etc (this varies from place to place), but in the end, the servers are taking out from taking care of the tables to pack it. Some places have people designated to take care of togos, but some do not.

when there's a rush, packing a to-go can ultimately hurt the tips you receive at the tables.

i definitely dont expect a large tip from a togo, but even a buck or two helps. small togo's, whatever. but if you are ordering a large order, consider tipping a few bucks.
