why do people applaud in movie theathers??
they are just cheering on the actors. actors need moral support to complete the performance. actually i think it is just a commentary on the film to show that the audience likes what is going on. Some commentary seems more welcome than others. For instance, ive never seen anyone get mad at clapping, but the hardcore lotr fan in front of me got mad at the last lotr film when sam and frodo were holding each other at the end and i told my friend that they were going to make out.
i think you only see clapping on the first showing of films where the crowd is more enthusiastic (i personally like it). i think it adds to the film as long as there isn't any side commentary. i watched the matrix revolution's twice. i watched on opening night and after the playground scene where it was neo vs agent smith x100, the audience clapped and really appreciated the screenplay. the other time, just total silence.
i've heard that actor in the film sometimes sneak into the theater to get audience reaction.

All this talk reminds me of the Sienfeld Ep. about the purto rican parade where George wants to use some line "thats gotta hurt" during some movie but gets upstaged by some guy with a laser pointer. George gets the laser put on him for the rest of the episode. Great stuff.
I've had two different experiences in dealing w/audience reaction, one that contrasted greatly with the other (one liners and minamal banter aside).
During a showing of Star Wars Ep. I during the "A long time ago, in a galaxy.." people just went ape shit cheering and hollaring and what not; I guessed it was because it was the first new star wars in 16 years, but man you could feel the entergy of the geeks in there.
The other time was at a showing of Saving Private Ryan during the opening scenes when all you could here, or see for that matter, were all the older men, possibly veterens I suppose, get up (some with tears running down their face) and exit the theater only to return after the completion of the invasion at Normandy. It was a sombering mood to say the least.

yeah opening night is really the only time that I've ever seen people actually have any emotion. And sometimes it actually happens more for the trailers at the beginning of the movie than at the end of the movie...or maybe that's just the way things are like here in VA?? I like going to opening night movies...its a little more exciting seeing everyone there (not people that I know but just a crowd). The most out of control movie I saw opening night was probably Jackass. Not only were people drunk in the theatre (well, I cant say much I brought a flask of Jack and we all bought a coke at the concession stand), but some people were smoking pot (dont ask me how but we could all smell it). The whole movie had gross Sh!t in it so of course everyone was oooh-ing when it all happened so it was pretty loud the entire time. It was lots of fun though. (some others I saw opening night: matrix trilogy, harry potter, LoTR trilogy(not including the 2nd one), and 8mi to name just a few).
I guess I dont mind anything else b/c nobody yells out rude comments whenever I go see a movie. If they did, I would seriously go find out where they were sitting and dump a soda on their head.
Applauding during a movie is just like laughing during a movie, or like CKhaos said cheering while watching a football game at home.
I don't see an issue with any of those, and it's a little freaky to me that somebody can be so bothered by somebody else expressing themsevles.
