Case in point, I guess. Who would actually say "You have got mail"? To be correct you have to say "You have mail." I think you could even say "You got mail," as in, you received mail today. Pick one word or the other...contracting the two doesn't make it right.

No, really??? I guess that is the problem.

You've got is improper. Just because AOL does it, correct it does not make.

You have got. Does that make sense? Here's an example.

"You've got a big thumb." Dissect the contraction and it reads as follows.

"You have got a big thumb." That simply is poor grammar. The correct sentence should read, "You have a big thumb."

Doh, Tedow beat me to it.

It seems like it would limit your marketability. If I were to go to an interview and say "ain't", "that don't make no sense", etc.... I am pretty sure I would not get the job, unless it was bagging groceries (or something like that).

Speaking poorly reflects poorly on the speaker (in my opinion). I don't think a lot of these guys (and gals) have any real game plan for their future, so I guess it really doesn't matter that much.?

Cuz that's the way they like to speak; much like Ebonics for the southern white folks. I ain't got a prob with it.
I don't think you quite have a handle on the definition of ebonics.

Go look it up. You can also find information under "African American Vernacular English (AAVE)."

Perhaps you should be a little less shallow and focus on the substance of what someone is saying rather than how they are saying it.

I agree to some extent. However, if I'm interviewing someone to work in my office, grammar counts. Grammar skills do matter in the formal, working world.

When I'm dealing with someone for whom English is a second language, none of the above applies. More power to anyone who can get by in two languages.

"You have mail" is prefered to "You have got mail," but "You have got mail" is perfectly acceptable (I was going to post this earlier, but I wanted to be sure, so I came home to look up some references first).

"You got mail" is, AFAIK, incorrect (someone correct me if I got this one wrong).
I don't know if I'm credible in your book or not, but you are absolutely right. If it helps you to accept my validation, I can't stand it when people write "alot" instead of "a lot."

Edit: DAMMIT! (sic) You changed your post before I was finished typing!
