Default Why do you drive?

I've given this question a lot of thought lately as I am going to school in the East Coast very soon and will not be able to enjoy the luxuary of driving in fun cars for extended periods of time.

And, I've come up with an answer for myself. Its hard not to be philsophical or abstract about it but for me, it is simply the feeling that is generated while I am driving. Its not just the adrenline rush either, though that is nice. It is the feeling of perfect unison between man and machine; to have the car practically be an extension of the body; to take a turn on a familiar canyon as if i were running through the bend on foot. And then, there is also the thrill of knowing you are controlling a machine at its very limit while exploring the limits of your own confidence.

So what is it about cars and/or driving that you like so much?

I enjoy driving, but to me it represents the ultimate freedom of mobility. I can walk, but ti won't get me the distances I sometimes need to go. Same with a bike, rollerblades, horse, ox cart, etc.

If I lived in a downtown area I would walk everywhere that I could get to in a reasonable amount of time, except in January when its 20 below. Otherwise, I have to drive most places if I ever want to get there.

Living in a rural area like I do it is a necessity.

I'm with you on the experience - plus I like light cars that react fast to my inputs. I walk in town, but a car can get me to the mountains for fun twisties, or just get me around to enjoy a nice night in the country. I also like biking and have a road and mountain bike depending on where I want to go - same principle applies.

i like g forces, whether its the kind that pushes you back in your seat, or pushes you against the side of the seat. i think lateral g forces are more fun though, so that's why i've always enjoyed light, tossable cars with responsive handling. i love making quick, little adjustments to dodge potholes (or bulging manholes), and taking turns a little fast (not stupid fast since i'm on public roads most of the time). maybe what i'm saying is that i like being jerked around?
