why do you smoke?
I've smoked for 16 years now and I must say that everyone should smoke.
Why you ask???
Simple... I started smoking because at a young age I thought it was cool. Now if I can convince all you guys to smoke, then it won't be cool anymore and I'll be forced to quit!
Who am I kidding!!!
I'll just bum cigs and have new smoking buddies...
Seriously I plan to quit.

Nicotine is a very powerful drug and it's a very difficult habit to break. I gave up for 6 months once and while I couldn't honestly say every day was a struggle, it really didn't get any easier. The hardest times were social gatherings when I was happiest with a pint in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Many people who've given it up for several years will tell you that they could still smoke a cigarette at the drop of a hat. It's that difficult... I don't think you ever reach a point where it doesn't bother you.
Why we start is a fair question though. Many things in life are an acquired taste and cigarettes is most definitely one of them. Few people would say they enjoyed their first cigarette, so I suppose it's a bravado thing or a 'grown up' thing that that keeps you at it and you're soon hooked.
Smoking is considered far more anti-social than it was only a few years ago, so most of us are far more careful about where we smoke, and I suppose we're more defensive about it.

It's very easy to give it up IMHO if you REALLY want to and that's the bit that lets you down. You start off all motivated and it's relatively easy going with all that high minded resolve. When I was off them, after a while I used to love standing next to someone who was smoking and breathing in that lovely cloud of smoke, like a vacum cleaner. I was actually more effective than a smoke extractor!
Someone made the point that many of the cigarettes you smoke in any given day, are just habit which is true. There are certain ones though that are satisfying in a way no no non-smoker will ever understand. My daily essential smoking then would be...
First smoke in the morning with a cup of tea.........1 per day
After meals............................................. ............... 3 per day
Last smoke at night............................................. .. 1 per day
After sex (Fantastic)....................................... ........ 5 per day
So a total of 10 per day would be my survival requirements, but here I am doing probably 20-30 a day. I must make an effort..... soon.

Elistan, your friend mentioning fibreglass nicking yor lungs just may be true, In Canada..Players cigarettes do this, you can almost feel it, and it it does hit you harder then other brands.
I havent seen this mentioned either, so I'll throw it out. it takes 6 days to get the effects of nicotine out of yor system, and essentually break the addiction.
The mental aspect though can last the rest of your life.
For those that light a smoke in the car, will know what I'm talking about. Not long ago I was in sales, and would make a call, then hop in the car, and light up.. If my call took 2 minutes, I still lit up another..its the act of gettting in the car that makes me want one

I smoke because...
1. Boredom
2. It tastes good
3. I get cigarette highs pretty easily
It has been that way since I was in Junior High (I am 26 now).
Strangely enough, I have not gotten crazy addicted to it. I crave it...but I am too lazy to walk downstairs to smoke all the time.
I have been smoking more these last few months...and that just means 1 a day on average.
