Why is everything "gay"?

yup. and "bitch" is a female dog, and "pussy" is a cat. the more intriguing question is: how did every day words like "gay", "fag", "bitch", "pussy", etc. become slangs for those other things??

i guess what i'm trying to get at is that when "gay" is used in the context that munckee was referring to, the meaning of that slang has evolved beyond anything that insinuates homosexuality. instead, that person is merely saying that "something" is lame or unmasculine or sissylike, or just generally to their dislike. after all, a person can be lame, unmasculine or sissylike without being a homosexual, right?? how the term "gay" evolved into this new meaning, i don't know. but all in all, it's just a slang that has become popular, and people who use it are not intentionally trying to insult homosexuals, just like when someone uses the term "bitch" they are not intentionally trying to insult female dogs.

Well said.

The flintstones (you know with Fred and Barney) used to say near the end "AND WE'LL HAVE A GAY OLD TIME.... (they don't play that part anymore).

So, even the flintstones were a bunch of pipe smokers!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't a crap. I see no reason to limit our speach because it offends. Tolerance works both ways, something people seem to forget. Tsunami song round V

Well at least it shows us whether we're dealing with someone with class or not.

To me, 'homophobe' is a lot worse than 'homosexual'.

But I just don't believe it's possible that all homophobes are closet homosexuals!

How would you like it if people said, "that's white", or "that's yank", or "that's cracker"?

Would you just accept it as a figure of speach and say it has nothing to do with the literal words?

I'd be just fine with it. Really. "That's cracker" sounds funny to me.

There was that school somewhere outwest I think was predominantly native american and they changed the high school mascot to "the Fighting Whiteys" Does not bother me a bit. The emblem was a white guy in a business suit. They were selling T-shirts on the internet like hotcakes.

My girlfriend is Japanese and if I show up in some bermuda shorts and she says "That's soooooo cracker" I would just laugh. If I were insecure about who I am it would bother me, but I am not. I am fine with who I am and I don't need others to make sure I am not offended. If I were gay and someone said "That's so gay" I would be fine with that too. I have always been fine with what makes me, me and I don't give a crap what other people say or think. It is that simple.

For crying out loud you would think all of the Scandehoovians in my state would be pissed off that the mascot for the football team is the Vikings and they have never won a super bowl. I don't here them complaining though.

"people" do.... I have black friends who are accused of acting "white" b/c they don't use dis/dat/des/ and does. What about "dancing like a white guy". There was even a movie recently called "white chicks" with VERY stereotypical portrayals of white girls. What about "Honkey Tonk" being slang for a country bar? I don't see too many whites getting pissed about that. In short, there are many more important things to worry about than the use "fag" and "gay".
