Default Why not have good discussion on politics?

I been participating in two threads that have now been locked cause of their political nature. I am beginning to wonder. Why is it, that we can talk about girls, good looking girls, hot girls, pics of our GF's, girls we can't have, cars we can't have... stupid people online... everything.. that does not make us one bit smarter... but yet, we can't have a discussion about anything political?

I mean, i believe we have a better group of individuals here than some of the other boards, so a intellectual discussion can be had. This is the off-topic forum isn't it? Shouldn't it stay that way? I realize that this is a private company, and even if I pay my dues, I still have to abide by the rules and regulations, but I think some ground should be given on this....

I personally don't get it either.

But I think the reason for not allowing political discussions is because these kind of discussions turn into arguments and certain sayings and posts might strike a certain note in some people and a simple political chat turns into a personal flame war.

Politics, politics, politics.

Meh, you and I know that there are flame wars in all types of threads, at least with political threads it can be a little more intellectual at the beginning before the ego's and flames start Some people are so wrapped up in keeping the peace, they forget that conflicting opinions are the vary basis of any good online forum..

the reason for the banning is unlike most other topics, religious wars are not fought over which color s2k is fastest

for the same reason politics are banned, emacs vs. vi discussions are also banned. because emacs sucks and vi is the only true editor in the universe.

what i don't understand that if i was a person for woman's rights or something of that nature... and i make a big fuss about seeing half naked pics of girls.. or something like that... *note.. i am not.. keep those posts going* i am sure the moderators won't do anything about that, cause i can just not read it. Why can't they do the same thing with political posts? people just stay away.. if they don't want to be part of it...

b/c everyone has something to say, and by nature a political discussion will lead to harsh, intense, and rude arguments more than anything else, save religion.

You'd think people would be able to control themselves, wouldn't you? But how many times do we have to say, "if you don't like it, stay away?"

Is it better to ban politics to begin with or allow them but then lock every thread once it gets out of hand and personal? I prefer it as it is now. Very few people in todays society know how to have an intelligent discussion without resorting to personal attacks and agendas.

I still don't understand why a subforum on off-topic with a sticky thread wouldn't do the trick.

BTW, pretty damn ironic of Strike to make comments about personal attacks

the bottom line is that the owner of this board has the right to allow and disallow whatever he/she chooses. there are other boards on the internet that welcome that kind of discussion, so if you have the appetite for that type of talk then it is "just a click away" so to speak. no company or organization on this planet serve an unlimited smorgasborg of interests of their customers/clients. that is why we go to different businesses/organizations for our different needs and desires. this applies to this website just the same. the owner chooses not to host political discussions for whatever reasons that abide to their mission for this site and that is that. the beauty of the internet and of the market economy is that there exists variety that allows us to choose...

For once - I agree with dkhl in a thread of a somewhat political nature!

I would prefer to see something similar to what Lee has proposed. Look at some of the really silly whoring that goes on in some of the forums. While most of the posts in some uhhh.. corners of the board are pretty useless - they certainly don't seem to be in any danger of being locked!
