Dell (maybe other manufacturers as well) is shipping computers with Vista now, but will give you a free upgrade to 7 when it comes out.

Right, that is an option. My mom bought a laptop with Vista and had XP installed. It has never worked like an OEM PC should. Maybe it has nothing to do with the OS install, but I keep thinking of that.

since macs should still cost a couple hundred dollars more than similar pcs, i think 7 is good enough to do just that.
Fwiw, once two computers are similarly equipped, there's not much price difference between a Mac or PC. You can just buy PCs in the low end of the market - Apple doesn't sell a laptop for less than $900 or a desktop for under $600, but once you price a PC to be comparable, the price is about the same. The one caveat being if you build a rig, you can save a ton of money on hardware.

win7 RTM is already out. If you missed the pre-order upgrades for $50, you can still get the family pack that covers 3 PCs for $150. basically the same deal. if you just purchased a PC since July, you SHOULD qualify for a free upgrade as well, depending on the mfgr and OS flavor.

Windows 7 media center is worth the price of the OS alone. no other platform or software can honestly touch it.

[QUOTE=MikeyCB,Aug 11 2009, 11:57 AM] That's not true, there are plenty of differences and back-end changes (I won't say "improvements" across the board - we're talking about Microsoft here).
