I'm pretty sure that the 60000 I make a year doesn't compare to the millions it takes to build that beast. They can afford it however I cannot.
I mean they could've built a smaller building. Everything over in Dubia is the biggest and the best...Do they have to be so extreme? what is the point they are trying to make? Don't get me wrong, the buildings and stuff over there are great but wouldn't all the extremely excessive money be better used elsewhere? Now what?! I'll play your silly game!

That thing is pretty cool. I wonder how it will stand the test of time, though. What if the ground/bedrock/whatever has a soft spot. Could you imagine if that thing started to lean like the Tower of Pisa? Or what if there was some damage or failure in a lower floor.

It just seems like something that extreme is asking for some sort of major calamity.

They'll probably just hire helicopters to fly 24/7 and hold it up.

The point is that the oil won't last forever. They're trying to build a big tourism industry to resume where oil will leave off, however far from now that may be.

But where do you draw the line? You could easily drive a used civic instead of an S2000 and feed some kids.

from wikipedia:
The decision to build Burj Dubai is reportedly based on the government's decision to diversify from a trade-based economy to one that is service- and tourism-oriented. According to officials, it is necessary for projects like Burj Dubai to be built in the city to garner more international recognition, and hence investment. "He [Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum] wanted to put Dubai on the map with something really sensational," said Jacqui Josephson, a tourism and VIP delegations executive at Nakheel Properties.
