I was thinking the same thing.

I would rather be dead than go what this guy went through. Anyone ever experience sleep paralysis? I used to go through quite frequently from age 19-25.
Its when you wake up, but cant move.. kinda of half awake half still sleeping, you can only see out of the corners of you eyes..
you fight to snap out of it, but sometimes it can last for what seems like an hour or 2. Sometimes you see (hallucinate) things coming at you. Its pretty terrifying actually.

Yeah, there's a thread about it around here somewhere. It has happened to me exactly twice. The first time was terrifying, but after that I did some research and realized what was going on, so the second time it happened, I recognized it and knew that I just had to wait it out.

i thought they could tell by brain activity if someone was 'awake' or not... even if they couldn't move or anything...

maybe i've just been watching too many medical tv shows.
Based on the article, it sounds like that's pretty much what happened. Previously, they had only done basic tests by observing his actions/reactions, but apparently they never did a brain wave/brain activity scan.
Doctors in Zolder, Belgium, used the internationally accepted Glasgow Coma Scale to assess his eye, verbal and motor responses. But each time he was graded incorrectly.
Once they finally did the brain activity scan, they saw that his brain was almost functioning as a normal brain.

Sounds like as much BS as flu vaccine girl.

Basically a "therapist" says she "feels" him move his finger to push the letters to communicate. I'll believe it if other "therapists" can document him doing the same thing.

A leading bioethicist, however, expressed skepticism that the man was truly communicating on his own.

The therapist, Linda Wouters, told APTN that she can feel Houben guiding her hand with gentle pressure from his fingers, and that she feels him objecting when she moves his hand toward an incorrect letter.

Arthur Caplan, a bioethics professor at the University of Pennsylvania, said he is skeptical of Houben's ability to communicate after seeing video of his hand being moved along the keyboard.

"That's called 'facilitated communication,'" Caplan said. "That is ouija board stuff. It's been discredited time and time again. When people look at it, it's usually the person doing the pointing who's doing the messages, not the person they claim they are helping."

Caplan also said the statements Houben allegedly made with the computer seem unnatural for someone with such a profound injury and an inability to communicate for decades.
