japan and korea has long history together, but that is all in the past to me.

it is hard for me on this topic.
i was born in Seoul Korea, lived there for 10 years and i came to USA 1989, so i been here for 15 years.

I serve in the military for US and i consider myself American but i am also damn proud of being Korea and that i was raised there.

i can write and read korean----it is nice since army pays me more because of this skill.

I have a friend who is Cantonese and is the perfect guy (Intellegent, good looking, in good shape, MD Phd, treats his wife very well etc) and his wife's parents don't like him because they are Mandarin.

My mom's family is blue-blood Japanese. Samurai decendant-Tokyo University style.

Marrying my dad was not cool in their social circle. She is still the only person in her family not living in Japan.

Rebel!

that's what the "adult" desi's call the kids. i think it's a stupid term though, 'cause they act like they haven't changed since they came here.

hmm, cantonese and mandarin are both dialects, with mandarin being the official language of "both" Chinas. now what you're saying essentially is true: cultural background, language, and family values are all different even if they're both Chinese but from different provinces. hell, my hong kong friends sometimes have problems with people from shenzhen, which is only across a railroad station, and although they all speak cantonese, it's different.
