Your tax refund?
I owe $199. First time in my life I owed, mainly because my wife earned for about a month and it pushed me over the limit (I was claiming two dependents). Last year I got back $3700 (I only paid in about $2200) and the year prior I got around $2700 and the year prior I got nearly $6000 (moving expenses).
$767 fed $67 state. I try to rig my witholding to get as close to $0 as possible but had a home sale transaction that made it difficult.
One year I got something like a $10 federal return and owed the state about three bucks. Hardly worth the stamps.

About $3000. This is the first time in several years that I have gotten any money back. FWIW I became a home owner for the first time in mid 05, so this is the first time that I could actually itemize my deductions.

I got a piddly check from the state of California, but it arrived only 8 days after I e-filed my return. You know why? It was from the controllers office, whose name is on the check and on the envelope, Steve Westly. He's running for Governor. Whipping his staff to get refunds out fast so everyone will be impressed and vote for him.
Being new to this country and the tax system here, what is itemization? And when/why would I do it? I'm sure it depends on your situation, so in what situations does it make sense? Single/married/certain income level...?
