to put it in fairly simple terms, you get to choose either a $5000 standard deduction, or any number of itemized deductions you would qualify for. I believe the biggest itemized deduction commonly claimed is mortgage interest for homeowners. many other itemized deductions can be made if you happen to own a small business...

Got around $4600 from the Feds, $300 from the state.

I guess having a baby and a mortgage helps.

i got back 4400 for fed and 330 for state, then i got audited for 2003 and ended up oweing them 5500...i love the IRS
