As far as caliber....9mm, .40 cal, and .45 are the most popular.
How much recoil do you want?
probably a 9mm would suit him best since he doesn't have as much history w/ handguns......i have fairly small hands, when i shoot the HK USP Compact .45cal it feels like a mini cannon in my hands (cross between the size of the gun & recoil); for me my fav is .40cal, it's a good mix for me

The pattern with a legal barral would only be about 5 in. in diameter out to around 35 ft.
I'm not a big fan of 9mm as far as knock down power. Of course the round you load has effect on that. The 45 caliber is nice but I prefer a 40 eventhough I do not have any combat experience with it. Spec ops boys had some 40 caliber glocks and they swore by them.
AR15 is nice to carry especially when your hauling a big ass aid pack in the field. Less clumsy than the standard m16.
MP5 HK is fun to shoot. Went to a german army range once and shot one. Very impressive. Feels like a toy in your hand. Not a lot of recoil which makes it easy to keep the sites on target. Great close combat weapon. I think SWAT teams use those in some cities. Sam would know more about that. Guns are like cars, all depends on the owner and what you like. Got to test shoot a gun like you test drive a car.
I had a 45 caliber (P90)Ruger that I loved. Had the de -cock on both sides which makes for a very safe weapon. Fun to target shoot with and keep for home security. Kind of bulky to carry though. When I carried, I had a 45 officers addition which is a short barrel hand gun. Great to carry, but did not have a de-cock and I hate lowering that hammer manually. Just gives me the creeps. Definately not a fire arms expert, just wanted to share what I know and like.
Coolest gun I ever fired was a 50 cal on the top of a M1A1 Tank at Fort Knox. Also fired a TOW Missile which was interesting.
Scared the poop out of me.

Sam, we are talking about Timmy here. I was betting on a ghetto blasting short barrel Mossburg with buck shot.

Damn, I need to get back to the range soon. I have two Sig P226s. One is the Stainless Steel frame chambers in .40SW, the other is a limited edition Navy Seals edition in 9mm. (Proceeds of the sale went to support the families of fallen special forces operators.)
Looks like you guys had fun.
