Default Winter tires

Hey all. I was thinking about putting winter tires on by rears only. The tires I see at tirerack are 16s. Has nayone ever changed out your rear tires only for winter? and if so, what tires do you suggest.

(please don't tell me to do a search, i did one and came up with some good ideas)

Uhhhh you'll need good traction in the front also. Don't be cheap Ray.

When I was young and not so smart (like a gazillion years ago), I ran rear snow tires only on a Mustang. It was extremely dangerous, but I didn't know any better and I thought me and my car were invincible. I turned out that I was just plain lucky.
You really need snow tires for the front because you need to be able to stop and turn. Your rears won't help much in these departments.
Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22's make a good compromise between snow drip and dry road performance but they are somewhat pricey. Blizzak WS-50's are a bit cheaper but they are more aggressive snow tires and handle less well in the dry. Almost any dedicate snow tire will get you by, even the cheapest ones you can find that will fit. Getting 4 of these is by far much better than just getting good ones for the rears alone.

I am not cheap! Well. not always. Do I need to put 17s on the back and 16s on the front? My tread is low on the back anyway. I figured if I throw some winters on in mid december, i could hold off till spring for my new rears.
thanks for the help fellas.

Are you going to get a separate set of wheels for the snow tires? If not, then just get 16" snows. You shouldn't be mixing 16" and 17" front and rear. Also, if you are getting new wheels, you should see which are more expensive - 16" or 17" snow tires.

You won't regret getting 4. I did a little test today, partly to "exercise" my ABS and partly to have a little fun. I found a stretch of road that was hard packed snow and ice and slammed on the brakes. The S2000 with snow tires on all 4's and ABS stops surprisingly well.
