A quick simple question about service
I like to follow my eyeballs on this one for cars that spend duty time at the track and watch the dipstick like a hawk for discoloration that would indicate I should bail on the contents of the oil pan. I do have an oil extractor that makes changes pretty easy (since I lack the luxury of a lift).
At the moment, my S2k engine is still well within the breakin period at 2600 miles but I still am watching for the color to darken to the point where I might step in prior to the prescribed first change. I have frequently heard that the first oil change should strictly follow the manufacturers guidelines more religiously than the schedule that I might follow later to assure that the initial metal wear matches the engineering targets.
I have been somewhat amazed that the oil color is still a light amber in spite of my best efforts to hasten the breakin period with 4 days on the track so far

Under "normal" conditions -- and I'd include virtually ALL driving on public roads unless you live in the middle of nowhere and hammer on the car religiously -- your oil will be just fine for the mileage/time periods used in the manual. Modern oils will certainly last 7500 miles and 7.5 months (or whatever the S2K service interval suggests) under normal driving conditions.
I'd put "tracking the car" beyond any definition of normal, however, so Alan's point is well taken. With the turbo and the fact that I do most of miles on the track, I'm hard on oil, but I also run Mobil 1, which is good up to 285+ degrees F. or so before it starts to get too hot. By the way, Alan, it's not hard to get the oil that hot with the stock setup on the track, so do be careful and consider switching to Mobil 1 if you haven't already. In my case, I've got an oil cooler, so my oil never hits more than about 215 degrees F, and a very fine aftermarket oil filter, so I don't worry all that much about it. Like you, I change the oil based on color and the number of track days I've done.
In short, for those of you who don't beat on the car, don't worry about it. Unless you track the car or have dropped a supercharger/turbo into the car, you can just rely on the manual. 'Nough said.

thanks guys for the reply.
However, my question still remains unanwsered. I apologize if i did not make my inquiry clear the first time
My intended question is:
for normal daily driving in portland (no tracking at all), how often should the motor oil and filter be changed?
The manual suggests 1 year for U.S owners but 6 months for Canadian owners (because the condition is considered to be "severe"). So, i am wondering, when u guys take the car in for service at Honda, how often do they change the motor oil and filter? Do they follow the U.S schedule or the Canadian schedule (since Portland is so close to Canada)
Thanks guys for all additional input!
