Wheel Bearing

Default Wheel Bearing

Hey guys,
I am getting a rear squeeking grinding noise from the rear passenger side of my car, I checked the axles and joints etc and they all look in tact. I rotated the wheel while it was in the air and I didnt notice any obscure vibrations or push/pull on the wheel but I am still pointing at it being a bad wheel bearing. Anyone local have had theirs replaced?

Have you checked to see if it might be the rear diff? My old diff did that and it took me for ever to figure it out. Don't you have a different final gear?

When you had a car up in the air did you try to wiggle it with your hands at 12 and 6. Any movement?

Did the squeak go away when you stepped on the brakes?

From my experience typically the wheel bearing when it starts going bad it doesn't squeek. It's hard to describe the sound but I wouldn't call it a squeek.

The diff was my very first thought also, but the noise was there when i had my comptech diff with the richmond gears, i examined it and it seemed to check out fine so then i sold it.

Then everything was sold during my last part out and i received a stock diff back in return, plugged that up and the sound is still there.

I been gone for a few months since the install so i havent had a chance to address it, but it seems like its getting worst. and sounds are so hard to describe, for whatever reason i said squeeking, but its more like a low thumping sound, which is worst when i make a slow turn.

The first thing to do is to lube the axle nut face and retorque... usually that will stop any bearing spin that squeaks.

I have had three wheel bearings replaced and part of it is insufficient axle nut torque... Honda upped the spec after problems but all do not pay attention.

thanks a lot chris! do you mean remove the actual hub and lube the axle itself and reinsert then retorque? or do you think i can get away with just removing the axle nut lube the nut itself and then retorque? any idea what the new updated torque spec is? ill have to give this a shot.

Just remove the axle nut itself and lube the inside face that holds the bearing into the hub (allows it to torque down without too much surface friction) and get the nut back on with 220 lb/ft or a little more. Most of the time it will stop bearing noise.

you might need a new axle nut though. I think i have extra one here and you'll be needing a 32mm socket then a big torque wrench that goes 300 ft lbs. which i have both of them. I tightened the axle nut to 240 though let me know if you want to borrow them. and cross your fingers hoping that's the only problem.

i have the 32mm i dont think my torque wrench goes up to 220lb/ft though, ill check when i make it home, thanks a lot for the input guys.

hey ira,
i tried this suggestion but it didnt fix it. the axle nut bolt is actually a 36mm, and i torqued it to 230ft lbs.

i checked for vibration or movement in the wheel again, but it feels like its pretty solid so im still hesitant to buy the bearing, and or hub. ive gone back and retorqued all the susp bolts in the area just to be sure but no luck. going to call honda today to get a exact price and maybe rent a press from autozone if need be. or might stop by forged and have john take a look at it for me since i need him to to help reweld something for me anyways. bah sucks!
