De Beers lives on...
Yes, and it's pretty impressive that they do so even though in the past decade or so it has become possible to make artificial diamonds that are more "gem-quality" than natural diamonds. Because of the cartel, they are even cheaper than natural diamonds. But De Beers has managed to keep them mainly in the industrial diamond market by convincing people that artificial diamonds are not "real" diamonds.

Go take your women to see Blood Diamond. Knowing what happened in Sierra Leone just a few years ago could diminish the appeal of the stones. The price of a movie ticket could save you a lot of money.
i think that'll be the next movie i watch

I've heard that there's a pretty big push happening to bring more of the "cultured diamonds" (read: artificial) to consumers though.

I don't think it can happen soon enough. I'm just glad the marketing guys for De Beers never sold cigarettes or other crap like that! I can't believe that for decades people were that gullible.

cultured diamonds are actually even more perfect than real diamons.

The cartels and major diamond shops are doing everything they can to shut them down however. I just heard a Shane Co. ad on the radio that was specifically slamming cultured diamonds.

Of course they are. If diamonds become as cheap as pencil "lead" (they are basically the same stuff, pure carbon), then how can people make huge profits by selling them as symbols of status and wealth?

So...
The point being, the article presents a pretty strong argument for the imminent crash of the diamond market. It didn't. Still hasn't 24 years later. So if that article is ones basis for not buying a diamond *now* the fact that De Beers is still in control 24 years later is important information. That's all.

Which is not to say it won't all come crashing down tomorrow.
