Default Diamonds are forever?

I and other unmarried dudes my age are big blips on the De Beers marketing radar.

This is pretty cool reading. I want to join a cartel, too.

Thoughts?

Thoughts about what? Yes, diamonds are a completely artificial market for a rather unscarce stone. Yes, the market for diamond jewelry and especially the concept of wedding rings was invented by DeBeers. None of this is news.

You may have noticed they are now heavily marketing the "three-stone aniversary diamond pendant" and the "ten year aniversary 'tell her you would marry her all over again' ring".

Next time you get told that if you really love a girl you will spend three or four months salary on a diamond ring, think it through. Imagine what sort of honeymoon trip you could buy instead.

IMHO, Things like buying diamonds are often emotionally driven and have little to do with thinking. Its not in the cartels interest for us to think to much. Be careful they may be reading these posts.

I know that it is 100% irrational - but the honest truth is that the engagement ring Mrs. Lig is wearing has been some of the best money I have ever spent - period.

She loves it so much that it has kept her from wanting any other jewelry. Crazy, I know - but true. She feels other pieces are unworthy next to her ring.

The corollary in the watch world would be Rolex. It's crazy that they are able to keep the demand high for the Stainless Daytona by limiting the supply. It's not as if they are the worlds greatest movement - but they do a great job by managing the supply.

For that matter - my P-car lust is tempered by the fact that I'm not entirely convinced that they are worth the extra money. Otherwise I'd be sporting one now.

The good thing for a cheap fock like me is that the original P-car owner takes a 20% hit as soon as he takes delivery.

have mrs. lig read up not that it'll change her love for the Rock at all

the p-car actually drives great - u can hear it, see it, feel it, move with it and sure the crap depreciates but there are reasons around that since the sucka is a bunch of moving parts that wear down

the rolex actually tells time and it does it reliably and will last you a lifetime and you can RESELL and quite possible to sell it at a higher price than what you bought it for

so not the same thing, but yes, all of these material goods ---> conditioned by the irrational, the emotions

i would like to know what are the true gems out there that are actually rare and that do command a high price if and when you want to sell

Go take your women to see Blood Diamond. Knowing what happened in Sierra Leone just a few years ago could diminish the appeal of the stones. The price of a movie ticket could save you a lot of money.
