Moving to Seattle
hey i saw and read the other members moving thread and got some great info from you natives up there. i have just a few more questions i was hoping you guys could chime in on. i currently live in San Diego and will be moving in the next week to week and a half. i am wondering if any of you have an "in" with a place to rent. i can spend ~$1400 a month for rent and would prefer something close to Redmond (where the wife will be working). if you dont have anything from people you know, where are "good" neighborhoods near Redmond? pet friendly would be a huge plus!
Thanks for all your help!

Moving myself from Orange County to Seattle in just a couple weeks.

$1400 bucks you'll have plenty of options man. I lived in that area for over a decade, I don't think you'll have a problem.
I'll be up there around the 22nd of this month. I can help you shop a bit if you can wait that long before completely landing a place. I know Bellevue/Redmond pretty well.

yah for 1400 you could get something pretty good.
if youre looking for a house to rent it seems like 1500 is the "break point" where you can get something really good for 1500 but for 1400 its kinda sparse.
dont have any connections...sorry.

Generally speaking Redmond is a "good" neighborhood. Go in any direction until you can afford what you want. Kirkland or Bellevue (West/South) would be more urban, Union Hill or Novelty Hill would be less urban. Few miles further and you're basically into farmland (that is highly prone to flooding).
As long as you have a cat or small dog, most of Seattle is pet friendly. Big dogs not so much. Seattlites love their vanity dogs!
thanks for the feedback! Greg i may just take you up on that offer! my wife will be working at the AT&T HQ up in Redmond. her start date is the 14th/15th so having a place by then would be sweet but it may be just like when we moved here to SD we camped out for about a month with family/friends before finding a place that met our needs.
also, how is reg'ing a car up there done? basic go get emissions and pay them some money and youre done? or are they nazi's like Cali? my main reason for asking that is i just bought my current S from Texas and have yet to register here in cali because they charge you the sales tax even when buying from out of state. and now that im heading up that way i sure as hell am not going to pay these fools $1200 for a week left of residency haha

Cars that are less than 5 years old don't need emissions checks. older OBD2 cars get plugged in (almost guaranteed pass if you don't have a CEL on), OBD1 and older get a sniffer. Once that's done, yep, pay fees, fill out forms, get plates. I'm not sure if you'll get dinged sales tax, since you don't have a title with your name on it.
edit: I think you're hosed. http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistr...erprivate.html
The dumbest thing about the process is that getting your license, getting sniffed, and getting your title/plates occur at 3 different places that are generally not close to each other.
Also, this site:

Put in Redmond, WA, max rent, rooms, etc... it pulls listings from craigslist, apartments.com, etc. $1400 looks pretty doable... garage, maybe not.

I've got parents in Bellevue so we're camping out there for a little, my wife arrives on the 19th, I don't arrive until a few days later and I've got dogs etc so staying with them a short bit will really make this move easier. I can help ya have a look as soon as the 24th or so if you can hold out a week but wouldn't hurt to search up until then regardless.
MUCH better for registration than Cali. The trick to WA state is to register outside of the metro area where there's no smog and no transit tax, in that case it's a total of $45 dollars give or take two bucks.
It's about $45/yr for under 4000lbs however there is some extra $47 or so tax/fee if you live in the metro areas that goes to the transit system.
ALSO, no smog unless you're in the more populated areas, here's the counties that will force you to smog: Clark County, King County, Pierce County, Snohomish County, Spokane County.
I'll be registering outside of those since my car has no functioning ODBII port.
Either way, still cheaper than Cali. Esentially it's a 30 dollar flat rate charge and then there's "handling fees" and weight fees on top of it. Not that bad though.

thats great! im not 100% sure how i will be able to do this haha my situation is that i bought the car in march in Dallas from a dealier thus they charged me sales tax for TX. HOWEVER they refunded me the sales tax i paid them for me to pay to CA when i went to register here, but my temp tags still have a few days left on them and i dont plan on dealing with all the BS to register here if im moving in a weeks time. so now my question is (i will be talking to the dealier in TX also) will i have to pay the Washington "use tax"? im wondering this because i know if i lived there (in WA) and went out of state to buy it they would make me pay it, but being a CA resident and moving there already owning the car i should just have to pay the ~$45 to register yes?
what happens to the $1200 i have from texas made out to the state of CA haha hoipefully i can just have them void that check and make it out to me!?

also if any of you rent, do you have dogs? more specifically in the 50-65lb range...we have 2 and i know most apartments are pretty lame with their pet regulations
does nobody have "real" dogs anymore these days!?
