Default Racers and Ricers check your insurance

I just cancelled my Allstate insurance, partly because of two new additions to
the policy.

The first (underlined below) that says they will not cover liability, injury or
damage -
"...arising out of the participation in any prearranged, organized or spontaneous:
( a) racing contest;
( b) speed contest; or
( c) use of an auto at a track or course designed or used for racing or high
performance driving.

or in practice or preparation for any contest or use of this type."

My agent said I was no longer covered at driving schools or any other activity
at a track. Probably even autocross was out. I said bye.

The second change says that they will not cover damage or loss to
any "equipment, devices, accessories, enhancements, and changes,
other than those offered by the manufacturer of the auto specifically for
that model, or installed by the auto dealership when new as part of the
original sale, which alter the appearance of performance of the auto."

My agent confirmed that this would exclude aftermarket wheels, wings,
superchargers, exhaust, seat covers and pretty much anything except
bolted-in audio gear. Even a DVD player in the SUV might or might
not be excluded too.

And I saved a ton of money by switching to American Express
through Costco.

Don.

Do some insurance companies cover mishaps while auto-x'ing or legal racing?

I guess I'll be calling my agent...mostly about the aftermarket stuff, I never expected them to cover me at PR or auto-xing.

Seems like they should at least cover costs of oem parts and then let us pay the difference for the aftermarket?

Would they deny a claim just because the car has been 'raced'?

No one I know of covers "racing". But lapping days and autox and driving schools are often covered. Each person should know their own policy and what is covered or excluded.

Interesting, I didn't know that.

Wow, thanks for the heads up, I have All State too.

I can understand them not covering a "racing contest", because they probably mean some sort of street racing. I can understand them not covering competitive racing (ie SCCA club racing) as well.

But its probably a very small percentage of people who participate in driving schools/AX's that actually do damage to their car.

I can't see insurance companies losing big money on weekend racers and people who mod their cars. If anything driving schools are educational and do make you a better driver. If insurance companies want to save money maybe they should just stop coverage during rush hour :p

Every once in a while it does happen, though.

Yeah. My agent said he personally had handled more than one such claim.

Remember, liability (for death, injury, damage etc.) may be more than for the
car itself - it could add up to big bucks.

What?, i was trying to get out of allstate too. tried to get a quote from Costco and they declined even a quote. The reason was "uninsurable vehicle (s2000)".
