Default Recommendation on OBD reader?

Hi,

I'm looking to buy an OBD reader. Figure it's a good tool to have before I take my car to the mechanic to fix a "check engine light" scenario. And as it turns out I'm in one of those situations now with my SUV.

I just need something basic. Give me a code so I can research it online or something. I prefer a standalone device rather than something that works via my laptop. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles, though feel free to tell me why feature X is absolutely necessary. I know nothing about what's in the market here. I figure some of you guys might have some experience.

So, I'd appreciate your take on the following:
1. What kind of price range should I expect to be in?
2. Do you have any recommendations of specific models of readers (keeping in mind my criteia above).
3. If "no" to #2, then what list of features should I keep in mind when picking a reader (again, keeping in mind my criteria above).

Thanks,
Joe

You should be able to find a cable and software package to interface with a laptop for about $100.00. Wireless (bluetooth) models run about $250.

I prefer a standalone device. Is there a good reason to go with a cable+software solution?

Don't laugh, but Harbor Freight usually has some cheap ones under $100 that throws codes OK.
