Ruby goes to Cali.....advice, pointers, suggestions!!!
Smokee: Wow!! Thanks so much for your directions
I take it that you've been to Cali a few times?
I'll be sure to print out your directions and try that route on the way to Cali. Sounds good to me.
We're going over the Remembrance long weekend, so I figured there would be quite a bit of traffic. Also...thinking of leaving Vancouver around 3am ish....I think from here to Seattle and getting out of Seattle will hold us up abit since we have to cross the border as well at Peace Arch.
Anyways, thank you very much for your great directions!!

I
down every Summer and just drove down a couple weeks ago! My opinion is that Yes I-5 is the quickest way to go! But I did do the cut over in Grants Pass to 101 and down to the Bay Area from there last December! Its a beautifull drive on the coast!
I also drove down The Coast HWY from the Bay Area to Santa Barbara and thats very fun and very Beautifull! The traffic in SoCal is a bit overwhelming and hectic but hey if your gonna go down there you just have to deal with it!
The Bay Area is my FAVORITE PLACE in the world as I grew up there so Im a lil partial to the drivin there
yes it too is congested and a lil busy but at times it moves right along HENCE THE WORD MOVE!
as on the 680 you pretty much fly along at 75-80 and you will have cars fly by you!
I LOVED it I enjoyed being able to go over 70 and not even worry bout gettin a ticket as in WA
Well enjoy your trip take pics and show us when you get back!

Smokee has it down right.
In the last 6 months I drove from Cali to Seattle twice (coming from TX both times). I-5 is boring as hell, esp. when you get down to the OR/CA border after you get out of the mountains. You wont see anything until you hit the Bay Area, and that is a long portion of the trip.
I drove the Coast from Santa Monica to Lincoln City, OR on my move up here and it was great. IMHO the OR coast is WAYYY nicer than the Cali coast, and I didnt even hit the nice stuff in N. OR by Canon Beach.
BTW- the "17 Mile Drive" is overated if you stop in Monterey, but I did see it on an overcast day this summer.
I remember my favorite twisties was between San Simeon and Big Sur. Great stuff if the roads are clear.
Have a very safe trip

You're welcome christy, but don't get locked into my route. Half the fun of travelling is going where the spirit takes you. For instance you might also head west at Eugene, OR instead and you'd travel down some of the Oregon coast also. The area south of Bandon where the land rolls gently down to the ocean is some of my favorite coastal scenery. Morro Bay, CA would be a nice place to stop over and spend an evening strolling around. Next morning take that little road 41 over to 101, twisties.
You gotta come back. 395 is the converse to the coast, travels through the high desert. In CA, the eastern Sierras on your left, the White Mountains on your right, both with 14,000 foot peaks. Work your way back home from there but look out for snow this time of year.
Enjoy
