Race tracks are exactly that, race tracks. The Helen's drive (if you're lucky enough to do it, and windy ridge is open, AND there's no traffic is absolutely exhilarating!
My theory on the difference between something like Helen's and a race track is this:
Racetracks: The course is static, every lap is the same (assuming weather), the focus is then on your times/car/driving/other cars.
Mountain runs: More dangerous and a non-static environment (there could be a rocks/trees/cars/bikes around the bend and the pavement has for more undulations) and thus the focus is on the road, the turns the driving. Doing anything with the added degree of danger (be it injury or police or both) is more exhilarating for many people. For these people, getting a similar experience on a race track will require more than a lapping day, most likely wheel 2 wheel competition.
As far as scenery... I grew up in Utah... I know what mountains and snow caps and trees look like. I wanna go fast (not dangerously so). If I wanted to drive slow then meetup somewhere and stare at my car in a parking lot I would have bought a VW, but I didn't, so I don't.

I could agree... but for some reason since I haven't spent a day flogging my car, performing a mind numbing repetitive lap after lap at the track... I have no clue as to what you are describing, so I really cant agree or I will be outcasted once again in the proper wave of thought for the experienced track stars in the bunch, I must conform

Mind numbing? Is it Mind numbing for Jenson Button? How about for Jimmy Stewart? Is it mind numbing traveling at 100+ mph surrounded by dozens of other cars fighting to be in front of you?
Is it Mind numbing to be in a 110 degree car, on a 130 degree track on a 90 degree day in a 3 layer suit, shoes, gloves and helmet trying to focus long enough to keep the car that's drafting you on the front stretch from taking away 1st place heading into the turn 1 at 130 mph trying to out brake each other?
Is it mind numbing to be chasing 3 cars and watching 2 of them touch and spin right in front of you through turn 2 at Pacific raceways and trying to judge whether or not to swerve left or right or not at all to avoid both cars without leaving the track yourself all the while trying to manage that 1% of grip you've left yourself while driving at the limit?
Mind numbing? MIND NUMBING? What the hell do you do with your life that makes THAT which I mentioned above seem MIND NUMBING?
It's like the town chronic masturbator telling me that sex with supermodels is only "so-so".
